Divergent Devotions: Faith in the Faction System: DAUNTLESS

DAUNTLESS
As Children of God we are called to go out and tell the world about Him, His Son and what He has done for us. Witnessing to others is hard. It is scary and completely intimidating. There is no denying that. Missionaries, pastors, worship leaders and Sunday school teachers are all faced with the challenge of publicly telling others about God and Jesus and how to live for Him. Let’s face it, you have to be pretty Dauntless to boldly tell others your testimony.
But here’s the thing, God has given us all the tools we need to go out and be brave for Him and His cause. He hand-picked us to do His work. (Pretty cool right?) Don’t let fear of failing or other’s opinions of your faith hold you back from openly living for a God who so unconditionally loves you! A simple tweet of a Bible verse, a Facebook status sharing something God has done for you lately, an Insta pic of your Bible and the page you're reading, all simple ways to outwardly show Who you live for! Go on, BE BRAVE and shine the little light that God placed in your heart to others!

Here are some verses that encourage us to be Dauntless in our faith!

Joshua 10:25
And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Isaiah 35:4 (one of my personal favorite verses)
Say unto them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; He will come and save you.

Isaiah 41:6
They helped everyone his neighbor: and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.

Thanks for reading,

Divergent Devotions: Faith in the Faction System

Hey guys!

Like the Divergent series? Love God?

Well you're in luck starting tomorrow (4/25/15) I'm going to be posting short Facton themed devotionals every Saturday on right here  AskSeekKnockReviews.blogspot.com!!!

I've been praying and thinking about doing this for some time now and decided to go for it! In the Divergent book series the futuristic city of Chicago is split into five factions based on people's strongest traits, Dauntless the brave, Amity the kind and peaceful, Candor the honest, Abnegation the selfless and Erudite the intelligent...there are great lessons we can take from each faction and their values.

In these short devotions I will be talking a bit about what those values look like in today's Christian life and I will give some bible verses to encourage these values!

Stay tuned tomorrow morning for a DAUNTLESS themed devotion!

Book Review: Heavy Hearts by Kylie Kaemke

Heavy Hearts by Kylie Kaemke

So like many of the books I review I stumbled upon this one over on Instagram. The author, Kylie, is super cool and actually bought a handmade Fourtris charm bracelet from me about a year or more ago! (if you don’t know what Fourtris is you need help…and to read Divergent.) Ever since then I had read about and wanted to read her book Heavy Hearts so I did!

Heavy Hearts revolves around Lucy Whitten, who finds herself caught in a love square (yes square not triangle!) with three doting men (Simon, Finn and Malcom) who all proclaim their love for her. The story jumps back and forth from past to present as each one of the guys are introduced, which was interesting but I wanted more present action personally. Things get VERY sticky for Lucy as the three guys meet one another and are all pining for her love in return. Ultimately Lucy has to make a choice as to which one of these men she will love and which two to break.

Okay let’s get real…Lucy really doesn’t seem to have any self-respect. She quickly sleeps with each of the guys and seems to only think about sex while with then. She is an underage drinker and spends a lot of time making pretty iffy choices. Honestly she wouldn’t make the best role model. BUT with that being said, I COULD NOT put this book down. I have a bad habit of reading the last sentence of a book before diving in and totally ruined the “who will she choose?” question for myself and STILL wanted to read and read. Kylie’s style of writing is great and I can’t see why this is still an indie book and isn't published through a big name publisher.

Recommended age:
16+ for mature sexual content

On to the ratings!

Stars..
0 = None 10 = Tons

THE FEELS:
4.5/10

Violence:
There wasn’t really any direct violence. There are a couple of car crashes though one of in which Lucy describes seeing bones protruding from a body. Another time a vehicle catches on fire and traps a body inside. There is tension between the guys but no fights break out.
3/10

Sexual content:
There is A LOT of sexual content. The protagonist has sex with three guys on different occasions and some scenes may prove too graphic for kids under the ages of 13-16. Although it may seem realistic to some, others might see it as way too much there is a lot of heavy making out and talk about sex. If they have only read The Hunger Games and Narnia thus far this book isn't for your kid.
8.5/10

Crude language:
There is crude language used here and there throughout the book a few of each of “damn”, “hell” and the f-word but no religious profanities.
5.5/10

Other elements:
Like I said before, Lucy, however likeable, doesn’t respect her body as her own. I feel like she gives herself to guys way too easily and that could set a bad example for younger readers. There is some underage drinking as well.

Overall:
Overall I liked the book. I couldn’t stop reading even after I ruined the ending. I loved the boys and especially Simon! If you and/or your child is a responsible adult who isn't going to follow the example of sleeping with every person who shows you the slightest bit of interest and are just looking for a fun read like I was then this book is actually really good and fits in with other contemporary YA or NA books!
7/10

Book Review: Dorothy Must Die

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

So you have probably heard of Dorothy Must Die by now. It is one of the hottest reads out there right now and is a retelling of the classic The Wizard of Oz. This book has had LOADS of hype from Epic Reads and those who have read it.

*Spoilers below read at your own risk.*

The story is about Amy Gumm who is, like Dorothy, a Kansas native. When Amy gets caught up in a tornado she doesn’t expect to live through it but wakes to find herself in Oz with a mysterious boy named Pete. He tells her to follow the famous Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City but gives her no real information about Oz or how to get back home. Amy meets more people/creatures along the way who inform her that the beloved story book character Dorothy has become a power hog princess who is literally sucking the magic out of Oz. Oz is the exact opposite if what we thought it was. Amy gets captured by the Tin Woodman’s army and is thrown into prison for treason. The date is set for Amy’s trial and final punishment for her crime. Pete visits Amy in her cell but is every bit as mysterious as before. When the time comes for Amy’s trial a witch named Mombi appears in her cell and whisks Amy away to the headquarters of The Revolutionary Order of the Wicked (they're against Dorothy, duh. lol.). They give Amy a mission, to get close to and kill Dorothy in order to return Oz to its former glory. Which doesn’t happen, hence book two.

Sooo….this book did NOT live up to its hype for me. It took me like a month and a half to read it. I just wasn’t that interested to be honest. One, Dorothy didn't die, Amy was so confused, the “mission” that the Order gave her was not at all clear, and nothing from the back of the book cover was even addressed until the last chapter. The idea of a corrupt Oz was cool, Amy was a likeable character in her way, Nox was interesting to me and I wished to see more of Ozma, which may be the case for book two. But I just wasn’t all that impressed as I thought I would be. It felt rushed and drug out in ways and there was a lot of unnecessary bad language. The best part was Amy's training, for sure! I'm not saying that I hated it; I'm just saying that it’s not my personal favorite book.

Recommended age:
15+ (because of the heavy cursing)

On to the ratings!

Stars..
0 = None 10 = Tons

THE FEELS:
I personally didn't get emotional for the characters at any moment. Others may see some moments differently though.
2/10

Violence:
There is some violence throughout the book. Amy trains and learns how to fight with and without magic. Amy has to fight to defend herself on multiple occasions and she witnesses others being tortured.
5.5/10

 Sexual content:
Amy kisses her hot trainer, Nox but nothing more happens really.
2/10

Crude language:
There is crude language used throughout the whole book that was just really not necessary at all. At least one of each “curse” word imaginable was used including the f-word and a religious profanity. But I guess it could always be worse?
9/10

Other elements/comments:
Like I said, it felt rushed. Amy got to Oz and immediately was intended to do something big. Amy was also tugged on from a few different sides. The Wizard, Pete and The Order. She was forced into the so called “mission” with very little information to go on. It really felt as if Danielle hadn’t worked the details of the plot out yet so she just let the characters remain super vague and mysterious.

Overall:
Overall I liked the concept. I liked that the protagonist has pink hair. But I wasn’t as into this story as I thought I would be.
5/10

Prettiest YA Book Covers!

Prettiest YA Book Covers!

There are just SO many gorgeous book covers out there these days. I am one of those people who judges a book by its cover art...(hangs head in shame.) Seriously though if the cover is cheesy then I most likely won't read the book. Here are some of my all time favorite book covers in the YA world!

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin
So swoon worthy!

The Divergent series by Veronica Roth.
These book covers look just a good as Tobias Eaton!
